Swindell & Pearson Ltd is an expanding firm of Chartered Patent Attorneys based in Derby serving an international client base. We are seeking to recruit a high calibre graduate able to handle chemical subject matter as well as other technologies to train to qualify as a Patent Attorney, advising clients in relation to appropriate intellectual property protection and obtaining protection on their behalf.

You will be trained to the highest professional standards whilst working as part of a team dealing with a broad portfolio of chemical and mechanical technologies. It is envisaged that you will handle work in a number of different technical areas. You should therefore be able to work in the chemical field but you are also likely to carry out a significant amount of non-chemical work.

A Patent Attorney needs to have excellent scientific skills so that they can understand cutting-edge inventions. They also need to have good written communication skills to be able to capture the technical details of an invention in a written document. The career can be very rewarding and intellectually demanding for those who enjoy science and technology but do not want to be professional scientists.

Person requirements:

Excellent English language skills are necessary as is the ability to communicate effectively both on paper and in person. An interest in scientific and technical developments would be advantageous.

You should be conscientious and capable of working to deadlines. You will also need to be organised.

A large number of professional exams are required to become a Patent Attorney, so a high level of commitment is required.

Qualification requirements:

A degree in chemistry or a related field (2:1 or above).

A consistently strong academic performance in science as well as English language.

A PhD or industrial experience, while not required, would be an advantage.
