The Position

This 12 month contract role is brand new and will work closely with our team of Patent Attorneys to conduct technical analysis on innovations within the field of Electronics & Engineering. You will play a leading role to aid them in providing excellent client service of the highest quality standards.

You will be exposed to a range of cutting edge technologies, analysing technical documents and condensing these for the Attorneys in the team.

Whilst the position is initially intended as a 12 month pilot, should the role and the incumbent be successful, there is a chance the role could be made permanent beyond this date.

Main Responsibilities

The Patent Analyst plays a key role in the preparation of technical information needed for preparing and prosecuting patents for HGF’s clients.  The role works very closely with the Patent Attorneys in the group, but does not require a patent qualification, nor any patent law knowledge and full training will be provided.

Key Role Activities:

  • Reviewing the technical aspects of preparing patents for prosecution
  • Analysing technical descriptions of inventions in technologies such as software, electronics, mechanical or electronic engineering, telecommunications, computer science, semi conductors etc
  • Carrying out background checks
  • Completing prior art searches and checking for technical similarities
  • Using technical expertise to evaluate inventions
  • Collating technical drawings
  • Some amending of patent specifications
  • Summarising the technical issues of each invention for the Attorney
  • Competitor monitoring search projects

The above responsibilities are carried out using a range of digital systems, including HGF’s Tempesta case management system and external IP search databases.

About You

  • Must have a computer science or electronic engineering degree, a 2:1 or higher
  • Technically minded
  • Highly analytical
  • Enjoys reading and interpreting technical documents
  • Excellent written skills, especially the ability to concisely and accurately summarise larger amounts of technical information
  • Efficient researching skills
  • Able to multi-task effectively, often within tight timescales
  • Great attention to detail and consistently accurate
