Are you a newly qualified or finals standard Patent Attorney with a biotech background seeking a new role within the industry? If so, we would love to hear from you!

This is a rare opportunity to work at the heart of a science-led, global healthcare company – interacting directly with business leaders and clients, with the ability to influence the overall IP strategy.

Job Purpose:

At GSK, our goal is to unite science, talent and technology to get ahead of disease together. We have a clear strategy to prevent and treat disease with vaccines, specialty and general medicines by focussing on science of the immune system, human genetics and advanced technologies.

Our Intellectual Property group plays an integral role in realising our goal by protecting our R&D investment and IP assets. The IP group provides proactive support via patent teams to research sites in Europe and US, working collaboratively with scientists and senior managers in a fast-moving culture that is ambitious for patients.

You will be involved in everything from filing and prosecuting patent applications to secure exclusivity for our R&D investments, to evaluating and mitigating risks to our IP through opposition and litigation, to performing due diligence on proposed business transactions, educating client businesses on sound legal practices, negotiating legal agreements with internal and external parties, and proactively helping to confront legal risks facing GSK.

If this sounds interesting to you, then come and help us get ahead of disease together!

Application:

Please take a copy of the Job Description, as this will not be available post closure of the advert.

When applying for this role, please use the ‘cover letter’ of the online application or your CV to describe how you meet the competencies for this role, as outlined in the job requirements above. The information that you have provided in your cover letter and CV will be used to assess your application.

Key responsibilities:

This role will provide you with the opportunity to lead key activities to progress your career. Key responsibilities include:

  • Filing and prosecuting patent applications to secure exclusivity for R&D investments and advising on the interplay between patents and non-patent exclusivity;
  • Working directly with clients within the GSK business and communicating with patent offices and foreign agents;
  • Providing legal advice and influencing internal clients in order to avert legal risks, by proposing creative, strategic IP advice;
  • Analysing FTO issues and complex third-party situations;
  • Working on teams responsible for evaluating and mitigating risks to our IP through opposition and litigation;
  • Providing support to Business Development for both in and out-licensing opportunities, including performing due diligence on proposed business transactions and negotiating legal agreements with internal and external parties.

Basic Qualifications

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Newly qualified Patent Attorney (EPA and/or CPA or equivalent national qualification) or finals standard (part qualified, with at least pre-EQE)
