Before starting work as a trainee patent attorney, I studied chemistry at Cardiff University and then completed a PhD at the University of Bristol, specialising in homogeneous catalysis. Although I really enjoyed my time in research, I realised that the lab wasn’t the place for me, so I began considering other careers that would allow me to make use of my scientific background. I attended a couple of patent workshops during my studies and was drawn to a career in patent law due to the blend of science and law that it offers.

I joined the ChemBio team at Abel + Imray immediately after finishing my PhD in February 2018. I started working on cases straight away under the supervision of qualified attorneys. My work is primarily in the industrial chemical sector, covering areas such as petrochemical processing, lubricants, fuels, and catalysis but I also work in other areas such as food and pharmaceuticals. My day-to-day work primarily involves patent drafting and prosecution work (progressing a patent application through to grant), although I also assist with oppositions and freedom to operate opinions. The ChemBio team have a wide variety of clients so my workload is diverse and I enjoy learning about the new technology our clients are developing.

Training to become a patent attorney requires a mixture of on the job training and formal examination. At Abel + Imray, we are supported by a mixture of in-house tutorials and formal training courses to prepare us for the exams. I have recently passed the European qualifying examinations on my first attempt which I think is testament to the high quality training I have received at Abel + Imray. I have already passed the relevant UK exams so I’ll soon be entering the register as both a UK and European patent attorney.

Abel + Imray is a medium sized firm and has a friendly and inclusive atmosphere. As a training firm, there is a large group of trainees which helps to create a supportive environment. We also have regular social gatherings, such as our summer parties and office lunches, and are actively encouraged to get to know everyone across all offices.
