Becoming a Patent Attorney at Withers & Rogers

Qualifying as a German and European Patent Attorney involves passing several sets of examinations, and we provide a comprehensive package of support for our trainees through the process.

We will pay for you to attend tutorials and courses, including the “Law for Patent Attorneys” course at the FernUniversität Hagen, and additionally we have our own in-house tutorial system to prepare trainees for the qualifying exams.

The main focus of training, however, is exposure to a great variety of work on live cases under the supervision of a qualified Attorney. We give our trainees real responsibility early on, and you should expect to be making a significant contribution to client work within your first year. Our patent professionals know how to help and you won’t be on your own.

Who we’re looking for

Candidates should have a strong degree in a mechanical engineering discipline and, as stipulated by the DPMA (Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt), you will have a minimum of one year’s industrial experience in a technological field.

You will be able to demonstrate a passion for technology, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to grasp new technical concepts.

Candidates must have fluent German and English language skills, and confidence when communicating effectively with clients and all staff is essential.
