We are looking for a physical sciences or engineering graduate (including undergraduate, masters and PhD candidates) who enjoys engaging with innovation and who wants to apply their scientific and engineering skills outside of academia.

Meissner Bolte UK is a small IP firm situated in Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. Our location gives candidates the opportunity to advance as a trainee patent attorney, whilst living and working in an idyllic rural environment. Those who have outdoor interests such as hiking, running, or cycling will be in their element. Meissner Bolte UK is a part of the larger Meissner Bolte group which is headquartered in Germany. Including all of our offices we have around 80 attorneys across a range of technical fields. Therefore, whilst we are a small UK firm there is a significant European presence behind us. In the German Legal500 patent attorney rankings we are ranked as a Tier 2 firm in relation to patent prosecution.

As a trainee patent attorney you will be working with our innovative clients, principally UK based SME’s who work in fields as disparate as healthcare innovation, home security, and structural engineering. You will be assisting with the drafting of new patent filings, as well as prosecution of ongoing applications, and the development of patent strategy both in the UK and globally.

A successful candidate will have an excellent academic record with at least an upper second class degree, a first class degree, or further qualifications. This must be in a technical discipline associated with the physical sciences or engineering (no legal background is required). Candidates must also have a good command of both written and spoken English, and be able to engage with others well in a business environment.

The successful candidate will work closely with a Chartered UK and European patent attorney who will be your principal manager and trainer. Your manager has a good understanding and command of the UK and European examination process and will help prepare you for these qualifications. Candidates must be aware that it takes on average between 4-6 years to complete this training dependent on the speed at which the candidate wants to approach the exams, and of course on their level of success. These exams are very challenging and candidates must understand that they will have to put in significant time and effort outside of work hours to prepare for these exams over a number of years.

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package. This package will increase in line with the successful candidate’s experience and qualification level as they progress towards becoming a qualified patent attorney.
