Job Description

Intellectual Property Analyst

Hertfordshire/Remote Working

An alternative IP career

A career in the intellectual property sector is not limited to law firms or patent and trade mark attorney firms.  Nor is the only option outside of this working for a large corporation’s in house IP department.  There is a whole other group of businesses working broadly within IP law but tangentially to both law firms and businesses with an IP portfolio.  These businesses are almost always dynamic, usually fast growing and can develop their employees’ skills to make for highly commercial and highly employable analysts.  We are recruiting for one such company.

Who would this role fit?

Someone who has an understanding of IP law at least in broad principles from, for example, a Masters in IP or a law degree with an IP bias.  But a degree is not necessarily a requirement – you could have worked in an IP function such as an IP paralegal role, or formalities or as a patent secretary.  You may have even commenced training as a patent or trade mark attorney then realised that a career as an attorney was not right for you.  You will be great at teaching yourself what’s necessary whilst enjoying the full support of an excellent team.  You are someone who can find knowledge and absorb information via research that will aid your development in the role.

What is commercial anyway?

You be interested in a role where you have a sense of what the business is doing and how you fit within that.  This will mean working with a client base and offering advice on the phone, over video conferencing and in person.  Over time you will get a sense for what might generate revenue for a client or save them money.  You will begin to look at IP in respect to its commercial value.  You will help businesses through the patent process through invention harvesting and finding them suitable legal advice.

Who loves a presentation?

Alright you don’t need to be a whizz on PowerPoint but you will be delivering reporting and information to other teams within the business to aid them in building a client base.  You will be using data and research to achieve positive outcomes for your colleagues.  This may include patent landscaping, competitor intelligence studies as well as Patent Box reports sent to HMRC.

What about the long term?

The job won’t stand still, your career will develop via responsibilities gained over time.  This will include developing IP training for both internal employees and clients; marketing such as social media promotion and content; developing and leading webinars and looking for new ways to add increased value for the business overall.  It is very much the case that the company will support you in making the role your own, so quite what it might ultimately be is at least in part up to you.
