Reporting to the Head of IP, the successful candidate in this role will be responsible for managing the patent assets of the business.  This will include patent harvesting, searching, managing registrations and IP risk. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with R & D teams for invention harvesting, capturing inventions, searching patents, drafting product definition specifications, and drafting patents
  • Explaining the scope of granted patents to colleagues and liaising with technical and product teams to assess the risk of infringement and freedom to operate or patent claim charting activities
  • Protecting of the asset value of the IP portfolio through in house tools and dashboards
  • Developing patent cost mitigation strategies including cost effective registration to ensure the IP portfolio is held in the most efficient manner
  • Taking ownership of the patent and trademark databases, including for registration purposes, and tracking details of the patent and trademark interests of the business across the globe
  • Searching of IP assets from publicly available searching sites and subscriber searching sites and selection through due diligence and risk mitigation for FTO, novelty, state of the art searches
  • Liaising with external patent searchers or external patent advisors for evaluating technology relevant to the project for novelty and inventiveness compared to known technology
  • Using technical knowledge and experience to help identify technical activities that may be patentable such as in patent harvesting exercises
  • Liaising with the legal team on non-disclosure agreements and confidentiality especially in relation to robustly protecting trade secrets
  • Developing a strong technical understanding of research projects and collaborations for oversight for a future roadmap of products and services

This position would ideally suit a newly or recently qualified patent attorney, with some experience of and/or interest in battery technologies.  Experience of designs and trademarks would also be highly required but is not essential.
