CDT’s exciting mission is to identify novel research opportunities which have the potential to create new business opportunities whilst also benefiting our wider society. We are committed to sustainable and ethical business practices and are uniquely positioned to support the changes required to build a better world. We thrive on collaboration to identify creative and innovative solutions to address key global challenges in the areas of environment, ICT, healthcare and food.

Vibrant and diverse, we encourage all our employees to develop their expertise with us, with the freedom to promote their ideas in an inclusive and supportive environment.

We are seeking an experienced Patent Analyst to join our professional, and highly motivated IP team. The IP team is responsible for developing and executing first-in-class IP strategies to protect CDT’s and, Japanese parent company, Sumitomo Chemical’s (SCC) technologies. The Patent Analyst will also work closely with SCC’s Corporate Venturing and Innovation (CVI) teams who are responsible for identifying potential start-up companies for partnership opportunities. The role will involve developing, performing, and analysing comprehensive IP landscapes, and other types of IP searches such as patentability, FTO and validity searches.

You will have an excellent academic record with a degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry and an MSc in Intellectual Property, preferably also with relevant work experience gained as a Patent Analyst. Alternatively, you will hold a PhD in Chemistry or Biochemistry, or equivalent work experience, with a relevant technical background, involving some awareness of patents, for example as an inventor.

Experience in patent searching and analysis ideally coupled with practical experience of IP searching software, would be preferred but is not essential as training can be provided. Additionally, you will have experience performing efficient and accurate reiterations of search results that yield highly relevant but succinct datasets and interpreting the results for internal clients and IP colleagues.

With outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts to all audiences, you will be self-motivated and proactive, with creative and inventive problem-solving abilities.  You must understand and thrive on the demands of driven industrial research and be able to demonstrate that you work with the same drive and passion as all our teams.

We offer a friendly and fun working environment and welcome applicants from all backgrounds, as we firmly believe flexibility and diversity enhances our research excellence.  We offer a fantastic holiday allowance (27 days for full time employees), bank holidays, an additional day off to celebrate your birthday and a day off for you to undertake voluntary work aligned with our values. In addition, we have flexi-time and home-working arrangements.  Where appropriate, we will cover the costs of visa sponsorship and provide relocation support if you require this in order to work with us.

We also offer all the usual benefits you would expect, including private health and dental insurance, life assurance, income protection insurance, an Employee Assistance Programme and a pension scheme. It goes without saying that our salaries are also pretty good, supported by a generous sign-on bonus to welcome you and help ease the move to CDT.

Interested ?  We hope so – please do send us your CV and a covering letter explaining why you are interested in the role via the link on this page.  Let us know if you want to see a full job description and we can send this through.
