Why did you choose a job in this profession?

During my PhD, I worked in a technology development research group, where I became interested in the commercial side of science. I also had some basic IP training through various enterprise programmes and attended careers talks about life as a patent attorney at university, which sparked my interest in the profession.

I loved the interdisciplinary nature of my research, which allowed me to be able to work across different fields and learn entirely new concepts. I particularly enjoyed analysing and writing up results – a lot more than I enjoyed working in the lab! I knew that a career as a patent attorney would allow me to continue to engage with cutting-edge science, whilst having a role that was detailed-oriented and suited to the types of work that I most enjoy.

How did you get your job at E+F?

I applied through the E+F website with a CV and covering letter. I was then invited to an interview with two partners from the firm. The interview involved a mix of standard, competency, and technical questions, followed by a task. I really enjoyed speaking to the partners who interviewed me and got a great vibe from them, so accepted the offer as soon as it came through!

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy the variety of the role, both in terms of the technical aspects and the range of tasks I work on. For example, I might be drafting an application one day and responding to an examination report on completely different subject-matter the next.

I am constantly learning about new technologies and expanding my scientific knowledge in areas that I have not studied which I really like. I was also able to interact with inventors early on, which helped build my confidence in the role and supported my ability to draft applications. While the work itself can be challenging, the team is very supportive and always willing to help one another, making it a really enjoyable environment to work in.

Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to enter the profession?

Be prepared for a steep learning curve! It can be a bit of a shock to go from feeling like an expert in your field of study to feeling like you know nothing! The legal concepts can seem like a completely new language at first, but you will slowly start to pick them up and improve. Having a general understanding of IP and patents is helpful, but you will be provided with the necessary training in the role. At E+F, it was well understood that I was starting from scratch in the profession, and so I was given plenty of support and feedback on my work.

I found that many of the skills developed from my research experience, such as problem-solving, the ability to analyse complex information, and applying technical knowledge, have helped in the role, so don’t underestimate these types of skills when applying.
